Living History, 2003

Peformance and installation
Table, chair, sound track, book, pens, reproduced image of Sarah Bisdee
Living Artists' Week, Tasmaniana Library, State Library of Tasmania

This work responded to specific items held in the Heritage Collections of the State Library of Tasmania: a photograph of Sarah Maria Bisdee, 1864; a small collection of 19th century linen covered educational books, and a copybook from the early 1900s. I performed daily for 1 hour, automatically writing whatever came into my mind as I gazed at a reproduced image of Sarah Bisdee, herself writing while seated on the verandah of her home. Visitors could try their own hand at this form of automatic writing by listening to a specially prepared soundtrack.
