READ was designed in collaboration with Art Librarian Juliet Beale to transform the Carington Smith Art Library at the Tasmanian School of Art as it underwent renovation. The project creates a striking visual link between 5 different areas in the library and is based on the concept that the experience of engaging with information and ideas, no matter what the format, can be encouraged through art and design.
READ aims to honour the place of books, and recognises the emerging nostalgia for the time of the book, and the strong emotional responses people have to books as artefacts. Through a combination of classic furniture, warm lighting, rich colour, text, books and art, the project allows connection to a contemplative, ruminative place - the luxurious space of sifting through ideas - which is often associated with the book rather than the flickering digital screen.
